Piper Rudnick Certified Japanese Patent Translation
45,000 Words into Japanese in 48 Hours
THE CHALLENGE
A law firm client had forty-eight hours to get a certified Japanese translation of two patent applications totaling 45,000 words available in hardcopy only to meet a Japanese filing deadline. One tough choice was whether to spend time up front creating editable files in order to use translation memory OR to get the documents into the hands of translators immediately and use additional human resources during translation to address consistency. In addition, our law firm contact faced the challenge of filing these patents in Japan after business hours when technical assistance from her office was not available.
THE SOLUTION
If time were not an issue, the ideal method of translating these documents would have been to create editable files up front and use one translator/editor team to handle both documents. Because of the time constraint, McElroy assigned two translator/editor teams to each patent working directly from the hardcopy to ensure the fastest possible turnaround. During the translation process, critical content was shared among the teams to maintain maximum consistency. McElroy’s project team also provided technical filing support to our client contact until all issues were successfully resolved (about midnight our time).
THE BENEFIT
The customized translation process and technical assistance McElroy delivered allowed our client to meet all Japanese patent filing requirements…on time!
