A Message from the President
McElroy staff members learn, network, collaborate, and teach in today's "global village." Recently Bob Donaldson attended a MemoQ technology symposium in Budapest, Hungary, was a guest instructor at the Chico State University Localization Certification Program in Cologne, Germany, led two presentations at a Machine Translation conference in Córdoba, Argentina, and met with a partner in Vienna, Austria to review a machine translation pilot project. Kim Vitray welcomed guests to Austin from 22 states and 11 countries in the seminar that she led on the Behavioral Interviewing Technique at ALC (Association of Language Companies), while Patricia Bown hosted a GALA (Globalization and Localization Association) webinar with guests from 18 countries around the world on the potential for automation efficiencies in contractor vendor management. Finally, Rebecca Petras attended an ATA (American Translators Association) business meeting to continue McElroy's oral history project where she collected the stories of translators from across the U.S. McElroy was founded in 1968 with visionary focus on making the world a smaller place through the power of translated communications. The dream of our founder Ralph McElroy is being vigorously realized.

Some Advice on Vendor Selection
by Erin Vang, PMP Principal Pragmatist GlobalPragmatica
Localization and translation are almost always outsourced, and for many good reasons. Vendor management is therefore crucial to any localization or translation program, and it starts with vendor selection. Every aspect of vendor management—the financial and legal relationship, communications, project coordination, risk planning, and so on—will be easier if you start by taking the time to find the vendor or vendors that are best-suited for your needs. A huge number of companies are eager to have your business, most of them will bend over backwards to adapt their processes to your needs, and many of them are truly excellent. But one size does not fit all. The best possible vendor for one company might be a lousy fit for your company.
If I had to get it down to one sentence, my advice would be this:
Don't go by price, go by who understands your needs the best.
If you have time for more than one sentence, read on.
Point/Counterpoint, Business Communication
Multilingual, April/May 2009
We work in an industry that is all about meaning and communication, yet we don't do much better than folks in other industries at employing effective messaging. There are missteps and irritants possible no matter how one sends a message. This month, Tina Cargile and Erin Vang discuss different styles of business communication. Read full article.
Injung Choi
I am from South Korea (Republic of Korea, ROK). My husband wanted to continue his study in the United States, so we moved to Austin on the last day of July in 2007. Before coming to Austin from Seoul, I received a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Mass Communication, specializing in Advertising. After graduation, I worked for a global marketing research company as a project manager (marketing researcher). I enjoyed working with foreign clients and researchers and staying very busy!
After I came to Austin, I realized that staying home could not make me happy. I yearned for a more active life. Therefore, based on my interest in interpreting, I decided to take ‘Interpreting and Translation’ classes at ACC. During the program, I’ve learned a lot of professional knowledge and skills about how to interpret and translate English to Korean and Korean to English. Through this experience I was given an opportunity to become an intern at McElroy, working for the Sales department. I love the dynamic of the sales team, and I’m incredibly fortunate to be able to combine my love for marketing with my love for language and culture.
I love playing golf and traveling. Playing golf gives me a lot of energy and reduces my stress. Aside from Korea, my travels have included Japan, China, Southeast Asian countries, Canada, some European countries and several states in the U.S. I hope to include some South American countries to that list in the near future. I enjoy meeting people from different cultures around the world.
Today, I am learning more and more about American culture. Americans are incredibly kind and independent. Becoming an intern at McElroy has given me a great opportunity to understand the American working life. I really appreciate this opportunity!

McElroy gives to Lana Neal
Recently, McElroy Translation has begun working with the Miracle Foundation on a translation project. This month we have the opportunity to support the Miracle Foundation in a different way, through the work of Lana Neal. Lana will be traveling to India as a volunteer for two months this summer, participating in the life changing work of the organization.
There are currently 25 million orphans in India and The Miracle Foundation is dedicated to empowering the lives of as many of these children as possible by providing the children with a safe and loving home, immunizations, healthy food, clean water and an education. The primary goal of Lana’s trip is to establish and implement an English program at The Miracle Foundation’s three newest orphanages. There is currently no English program in place, and it is critical that a program to teach the children English is established as soon as possible. Future volunteers, especially long-term volunteers, will volunteer at these orphanages by teaching English as part of the program Lana will begin this summer.
If you would like additional information about The Miracle Foundation you can visit their website at www.miraclefoundation.org or call them at 512-329-8635.
And stay tuned to learn more about how McElroy is using their proprietary technology to assist the Miracle Foundation!
